Peripheral IV Cannulation

The aim of the peripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC) course is to provide candidates with knowledge and practical exposure to cannulation in preparation to begin performing PIVC under supervision in clinical practice.

Description

 Cannulation practice

The PIV Cannulation course consists of 2 hours of online theory with assessment and 2 hours hands-on practice and assessment allowing maximum practice using cannulae and realistic training arms.

​The PIV Cannulation training will concentrate on the non-touch technique. Should you require instruction and assessment using a sterile technique, additional time and equipment is required attracting an additional cost.  Please check your local policy to see if you require sterile technique training.

Assessment is both practical and written with a multiple-choice questionnaire.

  • Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals requiring up-skilling in peripheral intra-venous cannulation.

Prerequisites

Recent experience in a clinical setting.

Continuing Education

  • NMBA: 5 CPD points for nurses & midwives. (2 hours e-learning and assessment, 3 hours workshop)
  • Paramedicine Board: 5 CPD Points for Paramedics. (2 hours e-learning and assessment, 3 hours workshop)

Course content

  • Anatomy of the upper limb identifying vessels indicated for cannulation
  • Demonstration and practice of insertion of a cannula into a life-like cannulation arm using aseptic technique
  • Choice of the type and size of cannula, site choice and patient preparation
