Paediatric Advanced Life Support

**This is not the nationally accredited APLS course.** The one-day Paediatric Advanced Life Support course aims to provide healthcare professionals who have expertise in fields other than paediatrics but are occasionally tasked with attending to a sick child in a pre-hospital or clinical setting. These situations necessitate enhanced skills and self-assurance, prompting the need for additional training.

Description

Paediatric airway managementACN Endorsement

The course covers recognition of the seriously ill paediatric patient using a systematic assessment approach, airway management, resuscitation procedures, defibrillation and basic drug therapy. The teaching will provide participants with the skills to manage the paediatric patient in cardiopulmonary arrest until arrival of a resuscitation team or paramedics.

 All instruction is conducted by ARC accredited Advanced Life Support instructors according to current ARC guidelines.

Australian College of Nursing  - this Face to Face Training is endorsed by ACN according to our Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Endorsed Course Standards. It has been allocated 14 CPD hours (7 hours for face to face training and 7 hours for Pre-course reading) according to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia – Continuing Professional Development Standard.

Course content

The small group teaching by lectures, skills stations and simulations covering:

  • Recognition & initial management of the seriously ill child.
  • Application of the ABCDE patient assessment approach and intervention
  • Airway Management with ventilation
  • Emergency fluid access, administration & medications
  • Basic Life Support & Choking
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support Algorithm & cardiac arrest management
  • Cardiac Arrest Scenarios ensuring practice applying assessment skills, airway management, basic life support (BLS), and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED)

 Pre-reading will be sent out to participants 2 weeks prior to the course and consists of identified relevant chapters from the 362-page Advanced Paediatric Life Support manual - Australian and New Zealand 6th edition.

 Assessment is continuous throughout the course.

Prerequisites

Recent employment in a clinical environment and knowledge of current BLS guidelines.

Suitable for

Doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from non-critical clinical areas such as GP clinics, minor or day surgery units, and remote or rural areas with occasional paediatric patients.
